Background of the Study
Political interviews in Nigeria provide a window into the linguistic versatility of politicians who often employ code-switching to navigate diverse audiences. This study examines pragmatic strategies in Nigerian political interviews with a focus on code-switching practices. Politicians alternate between Nigerian English, indigenous languages, and colloquial expressions to convey authority, empathy, and cultural resonance (Adeleke, 2023). Code-switching serves not only as a linguistic resource but also as a pragmatic tool that facilitates relationship building and effective message delivery. The research investigates how these language alternations function to negotiate identity and influence public perception during interviews. By comparing interviews across different political contexts, the study aims to reveal systematic patterns in code-switching and its pragmatic implications (Chinwe, 2024). Data will be collected from televised interviews and online broadcasts to analyze how switching between languages enhances clarity, politeness, and strategic positioning in the political arena (Ifeoma, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Although code-switching is widely observed in Nigerian political interviews, there is limited systematic research on its pragmatic functions. Many studies have examined political discourse without focusing on the dynamic interplay of multiple languages and their effect on audience interpretation (Adeleke, 2023). This gap in the literature obscures the understanding of how strategic language alternation contributes to persuasive political communication. Without in-depth analysis, the practical benefits of code-switching for political image management and voter engagement remain underexplored. This study seeks to address this shortfall by offering a comparative analysis of pragmatic strategies in political interviews, with an emphasis on code-switching practices (Chinwe, 2024).

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it elucidates the pragmatic role of code-switching in Nigerian political interviews, offering insights into effective communication strategies. The findings will benefit political strategists, communication scholars, and media practitioners by highlighting how language alternation can enhance political discourse and public engagement (Adeleke, 2023; Ifeoma, 2025).
